The 40 Yard Roll Off for Big Jobs

Tall Walls, Up to 5 Tons, One Local Crew

This is the big one. Our 40 yard roll-off dumpster is the tallest steel can our trucks carry, and it's sized for jobs where the pile is huge but the pieces are light: framing offcuts, office furniture, the inside of an old barn. Up to 5 tons of landfill weight comes in the price. Tyler Superior Dumpster Rental provides 40 yard dumpster rental to Tyler and surrounding Texas cities, including Lindale, Whitehouse, Bullard, Mineola, Henderson and Athens.

Most homeowners don't need one. A single remodel or cleanout fits in a 30 yard dumpster for $120 less. Builders running a job site should look at our construction dumpster rental page, which covers swaps and multiple cans.

We'd rather tell you a load looks heavy while the can's still on site than surprise you with the scale ticket.

When a 40 Yard Roll Off Makes Sense

A 40 yard roll-off earns its price on four kinds of work. Each makes a mountain of debris that doesn't weigh much per yard.

New Home Construction

Framing scrap, packaging, house wrap and pallets. The EPA puts clean lumber at about 169 pounds per cubic yard, so a 40 heaped with offcuts weighs roughly 3.4 tons, well inside the 5. On a new-build site off Toll 49 this summer, one 40 took the whole framing stage.

Commercial and Office Cleanouts

Desks, cubicle walls, shelving, ceiling tile and old carpet, which the EPA puts at about 147 pounds per cubic yard. Office and retail cleanouts are bulky and light, a perfect 40 load. Property managers turning over units can find long-term options on our commercial dumpster rental page.

Light Demolition: Sheds, Carports and Old Barns

A wood barn, a carport or a sagging shed comes apart into long boards and sheets of tin. One 40 usually takes the whole building. The slab under it is a different story: concrete runs about 860 pounds per cubic yard, so it goes in its own small can, not on top of the lumber.

Bulky Light Debris

Foam, batt insulation, cardboard, a houseful of rental furniture. This stuff fills space and barely moves the scale, so the biggest can is the cheapest per yard. Break boxes flat or you'll be paying to haul air.

40 Yard Dumpster Dimensions

We don't list exact measurements for our 40 yet, so treat these 40 yard roll-off numbers as approximate: about 20 to 22 feet long with walls near 8 feet. That's taller than most people can see over. If your spot is tight, ask and we'll give you the exact numbers for the can we're sending.

On the ground it takes about the space of a pickup and a small trailer parked end to end. Most job sites and commercial lots have room. Residential driveways are hit or miss, and when they won't work we often set it on the street out front with a City of Tyler Right-of-Way Use Permit, which we've helped dozens of customers file.

One 40 or Two Smaller Cans?

Pruning a rose bed before the October festival is a good way to think about it: cut out what doesn't belong and the rest does fine. Pull the concrete, brick and dirt into a 15 yard can, and the 40 stays light enough to haul in one trip. On a mixed tear-down that split often costs less than one overloaded 40.

Things to Know Before Ordering a 40 Yard

How Much Room Does the Truck Need?

About 60 feet straight for the roll-off truck to back up and tilt its frame, plus clear sky above, because the can rises as it slides off. Power lines and low oak limbs are the usual problems. Send a photo and we'll tell you if it works.

Can It Sit on My Driveway?

Yes, on boards. A loaded 40 sitting on bare concrete will scuff and chip it. We lay plywood under both rails every time. After a week of rain, soft yards and dirt pads are worse than concrete, so pick the firmest spot you have.

Do Businesses Pay a Different Rate?

Contractor and commercial jobs pay one flat $65 per ton past the 5, which makes job costing easier. Crews in Henderson and Athens get the same rate as in Tyler.

What Can't Go in a 40 Yard?

The same prohibited items as every size: tires, paint, chemicals, batteries, fuel tanks and hazardous waste. Fridges and AC units go in only after the freon is pulled. On commercial cleanouts, old mattress sets carry an extra fee, so count them before we quote.

Big Can, Common Questions

40 Yard Dumpster FAQs

How big is a 40 yard dumpster?

A 40 yard dumpster holds 40 cubic yards, about twelve to sixteen heaped pickup loads. Ours runs roughly 20 to 22 feet long with walls near 8 feet; those numbers are approximate, and we confirm exact measurements when you book. It needs the same straight run for the truck as our smaller sizes.

How much does a 40 yard dumpster rental cost in Tyler?

A 40 yard dumpster rental in Tyler starts at $545, which includes delivery, pickup, 7 days and up to 5 tons. Extra tons cost $50 to $70, or $65 on contractor jobs. Framing scrap and office cleanouts usually stay at the base price because the debris is light.

Can I put concrete or dirt in a 40 yard dumpster?

Not as a full load. Concrete weighs about 860 pounds per cubic yard and dirt about 929, so a 40 filled with either would weigh far more than a roll-off truck can safely carry. Heavy debris goes in a 15 yard can or a partial load, and we need to know about it before delivery.

Who usually rents a 40 yard roll off?

Builders, remodeling contractors and property managers rent most of our 40 yard roll offs. Common jobs are new home framing, office and retail cleanouts, apartment turnovers and tearing down wood sheds or barns. Homeowners clearing a large estate sometimes choose one, though a 30 is usually enough.

How much space do you need to drop a 40 yard dumpster?

Plan for a level spot a bit longer than the can itself, roughly 20 to 22 feet, plus about 60 feet of straight room for the truck. There can't be power lines or low branches above the spot, since the container tilts up as it comes off the truck. Gravel, concrete and firm dirt all work.

Can you swap my 40 yard dumpster when it's full?

Yes. Call or text when the container is nearly full, and we'll pull it and drop an empty one in the same trip, usually the same or next day. Swap pricing is set when you book. Bigger sites can also run two or more containers at once.
