Roofing Dumpster Rental for Tyler Tear-Offs
Sized by Squares and Shingle TypeShingles are the heaviest thing most houses shed in a single day. A tear-off hits the weight a can includes well before it hits the top, which is why we size every roofing dumpster by squares (a square is 100 square feet of roof) and by shingle type. Tyler Superior Dumpster Rental provides roofing dumpster rental to Tyler and surrounding Texas cities, including Lindale, Whitehouse, Bullard, Flint and Arp.
Most crews ask for our 15 yard dumpster. The walls are 3 feet tall, so shingles slide off a tarp or down a chute and land inside without a fight. Two layers, or a 30-square roof on a two-story, usually calls for the 20 yard dumpster instead. Roofers running a few houses a week can line up swaps through our construction dumpster rental side.
Tonnage check: we work out the likely tons from your square count before the truck leaves our yard, so you hear about any overage before the can ever drops.

Which Dumpster Fits Your Roof?
For most Tyler homes, a 15 yard dumpster holds a single-layer tear-off up to about 25 squares of 3-tab or 20 squares of architectural shingles. Bigger roofs, a second layer or soaked decking push the job into a 20 yard can or a second pull. The weights below come from shingle-maker numbers.
| Roof size | Shingle type | Rough tear-off weight | Can we usually send |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 squares | 3-tab, one layer | about 1.8 tons | 15 yard, inside the 2 tons |
| 25 squares | 3-tab, one layer | about 3 tons | 15 yard, about 1 ton over |
| 20 squares | Architectural, one layer | about 4.2 tons | 15 yard, about 2.2 tons over |
| 20 squares | 3-tab, two layers | about 4.8 tons | 15 yard, about 2.8 tons over |
| 30 squares | Architectural, one layer | about 6.2 tons | 20 yard, or two 15 yard pulls |
Those numbers cover shingles, felt and nails. If the decking (the plywood the shingles are nailed to) is soft and coming off too, say so when you book. Wet plywood stacks up weight in a hurry.
3-Tab Shingle Tear-Offs
3-tab shingles are the thin, flat kind on a lot of homes built before 2000. At 230 to 250 lb per square they're the lighter tear-off, and one layer off a ranch house rarely needs more than a 15 yard can. We pull plenty of them out of older streets inside Loop 323.
Architectural Shingle Tear-Offs
Architectural shingles (the thick, layered kind on most roofs put on lately) run 400 to 430 lb per square. That is close to double 3-tab, so a 20-square roof comes off at better than 4 tons. Still fits a 15 yard by volume. Honestly, paying for two extra tons beats renting a taller box you only fill halfway.
Two-Layer Roofs and Decking Repairs
Two layers means roughly twice the weight. Throw in replaced decking and an average house can pass 5 tons. We've seen a 1980s roof in Hollytree come off in three layers, and that one went out in two pulls. Tell us at booking and we'll plan the swap up front.
Hail Season and Roof Tear-Offs in Tyler
Tyler's busiest roofing months follow the spring and early summer storms, when hail and wind roll through Smith County. On June 13, 2023, a storm dropped 1.75-inch hail 7 miles north-northeast of Tyler, and storms like that bring a wave of insurance roofs at once. Book the can as soon as the adjuster approves the roof, and we'll hold a delivery date.
Wet shingles weigh more than dry ones, and Tyler gets about 47 inches of rain a year. A tarp over the can on stormy nights keeps the scale ticket (the weight slip from the landfill) close to what we quoted. Back on the scale, a soaked load always reads heavy.
Before the Truck Comes
- Move cars out of the driveway the morning of the drop
- Leave about 60 feet of straight room and no low wires or limbs over the spot
- Old gutters, flashing and drip edge can ride along with the shingles
- Keep paint, roof coatings and fuel cans out of the load
More About Roofing Dumpsters
Swaps for Roofing Crews
Text us when the shingles are level with the top rail and we'll trade it for an empty, usually the same day. Swapped by noon. Crews working hail claims in Whitehouse and Lindale often keep one can moving between two houses on the same street.
Sheds, Porches and Garage Roofs
A shed or carport roof is often under 5 squares, well under a ton of 3-tab. A 15 yard can covers it with room left for the old fence or the garage clutter you've been meaning to toss, which makes it the cheapest way to reroof the small stuff.
Roofing Dumpster FAQs
How much does a roofing dumpster cost in Tyler?
A roofing dumpster in Tyler starts at $325 for a 15 yard can with 2 tons included. Most single-layer architectural roofs come off at 3 to 5 tons, so expect $50 to $70 for each extra ton at the landfill scale. We give you the likely total from your square count before delivery.
Can gutters and flashing go in with the shingles?
Yes. Old gutters, drip edge, flashing, felt, nails and the odd rotten board all go in the same can as the shingles. Keep out paint, roof coatings, tar buckets and anything with a fuel or chemical label. Those are prohibited items, and the landfill can turn a load away for them.
Will a roofing dumpster crack my driveway?
Not when it sits on boards. We lay plywood under both steel rails to spread the weight, which matters most with a heavy shingle load on a hot July slab. Leave about 60 feet of straight room for the truck, and keep the spot off soft grass right after a big rain.
